"Create zip" archives and 7-zip

For some reason, the archives created by the “Create Zip” action are not readable by 7-zip (“xyz cannot be opened as an archive”). Or maybe not anymore, as I think I remember them working when I first tried it.

Anyone else having the same problem? I’m using the latest version of 7-zip, on Vista. Tried it with WinRar on WinXP, as well as the zip explorer extension that comes with Vista, and no problems there.

Just letting you guys know. I decided to go with “Create Archive” for now, which works fine.

Michael

Hi Michael,

What version of FinalBuilder are you using? Because recently we updated the zip library which is used for the Create Zip File action - and this might solve this problem. Here’s the latest build:

Hi Tate,

I upgraded to the latest version, didn’t make a difference unfortuantely.

Michael,

Do the zip files open correctly with WinZip or the built in zip stuff in XP/Vista?

Hi Tate,

sorry, I don’t have WinZip installed, but they work fine with the built-in Zip functionality of both XP and Vista (that’s what I meant by zip explorer extension).

It might just be something wrong with my 7zip installation, but strangely, every other zip file opens fine.

Michael

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the clarification. If you can figure out if there’s a specific file that’s tripping it up, please send us a test case and we can forward it onto the developers of the zip library.

cheers,
tate.

The same problem.

Here is the quote from the 7-zip’s FAQ:

------------------------------------------------
Why can’t 7-Zip open some ZIP archives?

In 99% of these cases it means that the archive contains incorrect headers. ZIP archives contain two copies of headers. 7-Zip reads both copies and won’t open archives with incorrect data in the headers. Other ZIP programs can open some archives with incorrect headers, since these programs usually read only one copy of the headers, or they just ignore errors.

If you have such archive, please don’t call the 7-Zip developers about it. Instead try to find the program that was used to create the archive and inform the developers of that program that their software is not ZIP-compatible.
------------------------------------------------

And a long thread about broken zip files in the 7-zip’s forum:

Hi Oleg,

Thanks for those links. It seems that the vast majority of files created using the Create Zip File action are fine, so I suspect it’s some particular file or combination of files that is causing it to create either a corrupt archive format, or the program trying to unzipping it doesn’t understand.

Anyway - if you do have a reproducible case, then please send it to us and I can forward it onto the Zip component vendor.

cheers,
tate.

I have just noticed this issue too. Any ZIP file I create with the "Create Zip File" action fails to open in 7-Zip. I'm running FinalBuilder 5.5.0.240 and 7-Zip 4.42.

Hi Matthew,

Sorry to hear you’re having the same issue. If you have a reproducible file we can send to the component vendor, please email it to support at finalbuilder.com.

In the meantime, you might want to use the “Create Archive” action, which uses 7Zip to create the archive (You can choose either 7z or .zip format.)

Regards,

Angus

I'm having the exact same problem with the Create Zip File action.  This was not a problem with FinalBuilder4.  I will send a sample to the support email address.

Hi Kirby,

Thanks for this. I've passed an example on to the zip component vendor with a description of the problem. I'll let you all know how we go.

Regards,
