It seems the duration sum is not build based on the duration sum of each stage but on the diff of the first and last stage.
Its confusing when you have manually promoted stages that get promoted "later".

The build duration is calculated based on the difference between the build started and build finished times. I agree that this can be confusing when builds are not automatically promoted. We'll look into whether we can update this to exclude any time waiting for promotion.
